    Butcher Boy re-born?

A little bird told me that it’s true - the one, the only Butcher Boy will re-open in Reno.

I don’t know any details yet, but I’ll be so happy when it happens. My craving for wild game just can’t be satisfied at Whole Foods.

Take a look at Nevada Foodies for wild game ideas

Friend and collegue, Kristy, is heading up this fabulous effort to address the issues of cooking wild game. I absolutely support this, as I love wild game but sometime find myself facing some questions of technique with nowhere to turn.

Take a tour of Nevada Foodies.

Kristy fills a real need here, covering elk, venison, gamebirds and goose with really tasty recipes and drool inducing photos - all taken with an iphone! True! I got it from her own lips over lunch at Truckee River Bar and Grill (Moana and Lakeside location) recently.

    Braised lamb shanks done right

I love lamb, when it’s real lamb - grass fed and preferably locally grown - and when it’s properly prepared. A lot of folks have a real dislike for lamb, which I’m pretty sure stems from eating lamb that’s either mutton, or lamb that hasn’t had most of the visible fat removed. It’s the fat which contributes to the ‘gamey’ flavor that a lot of people don’t like about lamb.

It doesn’t have to be like that.

I make lamb that avowed lamb haters love.

High on the Yum-O-Meter: homemade chips at Butcher Boy

We needed a quick sandwich and warming bowl of soup this afternoon, and dashed into Butcher Boy where I can always count on the both the quality and creativity of chef James Garza. It’s been a while since we’ve been in there to eat - hey, I get busy alright? But this was a jaw dropper. Homemade spicy potato chips.

One of Reno's Best Lunch Spots: Butcher Boy

That’s right, and had some of the best darn Gazpacho this side of Spain. It had just the right balance of  tang from good Spanish Sherry vinegar and, I suspect, house roasted red bell peppers to add a depth of flavor that ‘wowed’ everybody at our table.

I could have made a meal out of the Gazpacho alone, along with some crusty bread (and a glass of wine would have been nice, too).

Butcher Boy is one of the few restaurants where I indulge in French Fries, too. They are perfect … crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I love the garlic fries.

You should know that if you’re looking for small portions, beware. I order half sandwiches at Butcher Boy. Since you can get absolutely whatever you want on them, with a great selection of whole grain breads, it’s enough for me.

Oh. yes, they also have some of those wonderful Hagen Daz Limited Edition ice creams. I served the Green Tea last night as the ending to a roast chicken dinner for company. I cut up some ripe peaches, added a dollop of whipped light cream and then floated a nice small mound of the green tea ice cream over the top. Lots of “ooohhs and aaahhhs”. I also recommend the Caramalized Pear. It’s so sinful, but so worth it.

I bought my big bad boy Rocky chicken at Butcher Boy for last nights’ company dinner, too. It was wonderful. I highly recommend them. It was slightly over 5 pounds but fed five people and there’s leftovers for sandwiches.
