Squeeze In and have a wonderful meal

We hadn’t been to Squeeze In - a long time favorite up in Truckee, California - for a very long time. Even when they opened a second restaurant in the northwest part of Reno, it still didn’t register on the radar as we live on the polar opposite part of town. That’s forever changed.

During one of the farmers market events at The Grove, corner of Foothill and South Virginia, a sign went up advertising the coming new location of the Squeeze In. They were there doing a bit of advance marketing one Sunday - collecting names, birthdays, emails. Giving away shopping bags. So I signed up - hey, I could easily walk to the new location from my house.

They sent me a nice birthday freebie the other day, and since Mom lives up in that region we decided to do the Sunday breakfast with her there.

    Wow.

Above, behold the Forest Gump Omelet. Run, Forest, run!

Yes, the egg masters at the Squeeze In actually know how to fold eggs over into an omelet rather than the ‘scramble’ that you get most everywhere around Reno. And in this case, I prefer egg whites and light on the cheese please, no potatoes, fruit.

    “No problem!”

This phrase seems to be written into the DNA of servers at the Squeeze In. Ask for anything your way and they smile and take it all in - no problems, no worries. This is the way it should be everywhere. I have to say that tattoos and piercings aside, the young wait staff at the Squeeze In are trained well. They aren’t winging it. I haven’t seen prompt attentive service like that in very many places these days, and it was a delight. They genuinely aim to please.

The shrimp in my Forest Gump was fresh and almost popping with ocean fresh flavor. When combined with a bit of cheese - I would’ve chosen a Monterey Jack rather than the orange cheddar blend - and fresh green onions …. Oh, my very good indeed.

Mr. Maven had the Gare Babe’s Denver and he loved it. Again, he ordered it with egg beaters and just a hint of cheese. No worries. It was perfect.

Grandma was very pleased with her eggs over and bacon. I sample the bacon and it had actual flavor rather than just a salty thing.

But the fruit was the thing that captured our hearts. Big heaping bowls of absolutely fresh, ripe mixed fruit. And it wasn’t in that obnoxious juice that so many restaurants use to keep it ‘fresh’.

Another thing that I think you will love at the Squeeze In is the endless ‘sauce’. You get a choice of a red which is rather like a marinara, a mushroom or something else. But I got the red for my Forest Gump and it hit the spot. You can order seconds or thirds … the same as the toast. Very thoughtful.

The only thing, and this is like popular breakfast joints everywhere - you gotta wait for a table. And it’s gonna be noisy. Grandma didn’t much care for the noise level. We’ll take her back on a weekday.

The Squeeze In menu is rather daunting for a newbie, an embarrassment of choices. Somehow I think we’ll manage to trod through it nonetheless.
