Who says you can't paint a house yellow?
Saturday, June 13, 2009 at 16:36 Well, I even had my doubts the other day. My neighbors came over yesterday, after Mr. Maven and I pulled in from San Francisco, laughing and telling us they had their doubts as well before the painter got the new trim/accent colors up. Apparently, folks passing by had been telling the house painter how great they thought it was, so I guess we’re in the clear.
It’s really just a leap of faith, combined with some actual training in color theory ( yes, I went to art school) and tinkering with the large chips under varying light conditions.
You’ve got to keep a harmonious and consistant palette - hue, temperature, tint or shade … and that only comes with a willingness to take your time and really think it through.
The architecture also has a lot to say about your color choices. Since the front of the house is really rather broken into different small sections - and then we have a surfeit of green foliage around it, and a green roof - the yellow, although bold - isn’t ‘in your face’ annoying. It’s not like it would be across a large expanse.

We used the Behr exterior ULTRA low VOC paint in a deep gold, with a deep ‘spanish’ red, green, espresso and a soft, warm creamy white.
Here are the accent colors a bit closer:

Oh, and here’s the ‘before’:

It still looked alright - from a distance, but you shoulda seen the peeling paint.
