Republican torpedo alley ready with cheap shots for Franken

Thank you, David, for that brilliant analysis. And there you have it folks, Franken can take the oath to serve the citizens of the state of Minnesota without one single wisecrack, with all the gravitas and decorum that should be the hallmark of membership in this august club, but there will be some who just can’t let a fella grow past a Saturday Night Live skit.

If you’re David Broder, you apparently think the Senate is a group of the most dignified, serious ladies and gentlemen to ever walk the face of the earth … in the greatest and most powerful deliberative body since Rome.

Those who would call the pot black had better duck

David must have missed these knee-slappers from that same august body:

James Inhofe of Oklahoma, who claims global warming to be bogus and invokes the bible at every turn ( rather than invoking … well, logic and reason ), Orrin Hatch of Utah “Capital punishment is our way of demonstrating the sanctity of life”, Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, “Isn’t that the ultimate homeland security, standing up and defending marriage?”.

Then of course who could have missed the comedic brilliance of John Ensign of Nevada - conservative ‘Promise Keeper’ - as he recently confessed his profoundly stupid infidelity. He was probably working a riff off of Mark Sanford standup bit.

And, who could forget the bathroom stall foot tapping comedy Idaho’s own Larry Craig, the email antics of Mark Foley of Florida or the guy caught in the D. C. Madam sweep, David Vitter of Louisiana?

Franken, Harvard alum

It’s too bad that guys like Broder haven’t really listened to Franken, who can be serious and policy wonk the best of them. Maybe it’s because of his degree in political science, from that bastion of comedy, Harvard.

You can bet that the repubs will be baiting Franken at every turn, trying to get him to return to the SNL wiseass, and author of serious ( there’s that word again ) tomes like “Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot”. Let’s face it, you’ve got to have a sense of humor to not have put out a contract on Norm Coleman for what he’s done since the fair and square election of Al Franken by Minnesota voters.

I admit to being a Franken supporter, reader and fan. There’s my disclosure. I doubt you’ll get the same from those trying to torpedo him.
