Friday Fish Wrap: February 19, 2010

It’s been an awesome week of Olympics coverage, and it’s particularly great to be able to cheer for a ‘hometown’ girl - Julia Mancuso of Truckee, California. For those of you not from around these parts, that’s just about  30 minutes up the road from Reno, Nevada.

Unlike past Winter Olympic years, the work schedule hasn’t allowed me to ski my brains out in support of the team effort. Yesterday and today, however, I did get in a fairly decent 10 mile bike ride - bundled up, course, since it’s not that warm at 0930. It’s ‘brisk’.

Here’s a nice bit of news on the healthcare reform front: There’s been quite a bit of new steam behind the failed Public Option of late. Senator Christopher Dodd’s decision to call it a day bodes well for his being able to stand up for what the American people really want - which is a Public Option and a freaking healthcare reform bill.

Just this afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid issued a statement that he would support not only the Public Option - which he’d always been in tacit approval of - but also the use of the reconciliation vote to get ‘er done.

    Monday Musings: February 15, 2010

For a Winter Olympics that got started on such a tragic note, the Vancouver games seem to have gotten their footing back. A horrible death, technical difficulties at the opening ceremonies, and a dearth of snow notwithstanding, everything has to be better from here on out. The U. S. Team has already set the bar higher, with their first ever medal in the Nordic Combined Event, a grueling display of skill and stamina in the combined ski jumping and cross-country.

Yea! Johnny Spillane took the Silver, and the Canadians finally took home a medal with a spectacular mogul run by Alexandre Bilodeux. The way too laid back Bode Miller finally woke up and took a Bronze home.

Here’s a weird place to start the week: in full agreement with Dick Cheney.

Apparently, Dick has a clue when it comes to DADT and gay marriage. If the people want it he’s for it. That couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the fact that his daughter is lesbian, could it? Another way to look at this: Dick doesn’t give a rats’ ass on social issues that don’t have anything to do with the bottomline.

The teabaggers should take a hint from this.

    Womens Synchronized Platform Diving

Could you believe those two Chinese divers? Wow! They were so perfectly matched physically that at times they really looked like one person. A tip of the hat.
