Truth: The mortality rate is higher for African American women

I would also add that poor African American women are probably less likely to have health insurance and therefore may not be getting the necessary mammograms and information about breast cancer.

As a Triple Negative Breast Cancer survivor, women should understand that it happens in all races, just moreso in African American women. And despite it’s seriousness due to lack of a targeted treatment that’s no reason to despair. I’m still here. The thing is to keep this particular type of cancer from recurring, since that is when the lack of targeted treatment really comes to the forefront. Chemopreventative drugs, exercise, keeping one’s weight down are all important factors in keeping recurrence at bay.

TRUE. White women are more likely to receive a diagnosis of breast cancer, but African American women have a higher mortality rate.

The incidence rate of breast cancer for African American women is about 118 per 100,000 women compared to 128 per 100,000 for white women. The mortality rate for breast cancer for African American women is about 33 per 100,000 women compared to 24 per 100,000 white women. (Among Hispanic women, the incidence rate is 88 per 100,000 women and the mortality rate is 16 per 100,000 women.)
