Aircraft collision in the Hudson River VFR Corridor

One view of this, by a veteran pilot and reporter friend of mine, Miles O’Brien at True/Slant,says that proper unicom callouts can go a long way toward prevention. As we all know, communicating your position in the presence of other air traffic can make the critical difference. Miles also goes on to say that the politicians will be flocking toward some sort of restrictive changes in how, or if, light airplane traffic are permitted to use the Hudson VFR Corridor.

He’s probably right. Unfortunately, a tragedy like this can be a sure fire way to tell your constituents that your’re doing something meaningful, while distracting their attention away from more controversial, hot-button issues.
